Having a process to follow sounds like a simple thing to do, yet for many reasons we often drift away from a method or get caught shining the light too brightly on the end result. It is important to maintain balance between pragmatism and principle, not everything can be planned perfectly, nor can everything be made up on the run. Process creates predictability and decisiveness, helping steer decision-making in heat of the moment situations. Big decisions can be stressful enough without having guiding principles in your corner. By developing and then sticking to a process we build accountability, trust and respect and eventually, it is the process that we end up shining the bright light on, rather than the outcome.
